This study aimed to investigate the management of self-censorship in Iranian sports with the purpose of achieving sustainable public relations. The research employed a mixed-methods design conducted in the field. In the qualitative phase, Glaser’s grounded theory approach was applied, and the participants consisted of 17 experts familiar with the research subject. In the quantitative phase, the statistical population included public relations professionals in Iran’s sports sector, such as managers and experts from the Ministry of Sport and Youth as well as national sports federations. Based on initial assessments, the population size was determined as 120, and according to Krejcie and Morgan’s sampling table, 92 individuals were selected. Ultimately, 81 valid questionnaires were analyzed. Data collection was carried out in the field through semi-structured interviews and a researcher-designed questionnaire. Quantitative data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) and interpretive structural modeling (ISM). The findings revealed that the key factors influencing the management of self-censorship in Iranian sports toward sustainable public relations include: information positioning, agenda-setting, framing, standardization, technical issues, security and supervisory aspects, managerial approaches, cultural requirements, psychological perspectives, and educational issues. The quantitative results showed that all identified factors had t-values greater than 1.96, indicating their significant role in the research model. Overall, the study demonstrated that the smart management of self-censorship can transform it from a communicative threat into a constructive strategy for sports public relations in Iran. By addressing managerial, cultural, psychological, and technical dimensions alongside informational transparency, organizations can balance institutional requirements with societal expectations. Accordingly, institutionalizing a systematic approach to self-censorship can foster sustainability and trust in the public relations practices of sports organizations
